Septic Systems

Safe disposal and treatment of wastewater is necessary to protect public health and the environment.  Within the city limits of Great Falls, sewage is treated at the wastewater treatment plant before being discharged to the Missouri river.  Other municipalities in the county use public wastewater systems such as lagoons.   All community wastewater systems are regulated by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

Private wastewater treatment systems such as septic systems are regulated by the county.  Homes or other structures that have individual on-site septic systems are permitted though CCHD.   The permitting and review process includes:

  • Construction
  • Design
  • Installation
  • Maintenance
  • Proper siting
